EDUCATION COURSE CURRICULUM
The education course is composed of six 2 1/2 hour evening classes and two supervised, hands on outdoor workshops of 3 - 4 hours long. All sessions are taught by Rhode Island professionals actively involved in urban and community forestry, soil science and landscape architecture.
The curriculum highlights the ecological, economic and social benefits of trees and includes discussion on the following major topics:
- Tree Biology and Plant Health care
- Tree identification, selection and siting
- Importance of maintaining healthy soils
- Proper planting, pruning and mulching techniques
- Diagnosis and treatment of common tree insect and disease problems
- How to perform a tree inventory
- How to apply the acquired skills and knowledge to your community
COMMUNITY FORESTRY COMPONENT
Course graduates who also complete 30 hours of related public service to either their community or the RI Tree Council will receive an Achievement Award as well as the Rhode Island Tree Steward Certification. This public service can be accomplished in many ways, according to the individuals interests and abilities. Many course graduates decide to fulfill their community service by organizing or assisting others with Arbor Day plantings, helping with a Council activity (helping at the Annual Conference, Seedling Distribution program etc.). Volunteer hours are reported to the Council office, tabulated and after 30 hours are accrued and Achievement and Certificate are sent out along with the official RI Tree Steward Cap or T-Shirt. Public recognition of achieving Tree Steward Certification is acknowledged through a Council issued press release, an announcement at the Council's Annual Conference and notation on the Council's web site.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
The RI Tree Council regularly conducts numerous skill building and life learning ,on urban and community forestry ,workshops throughout the year. The Council also frequently assists local Tree Boards, Societies and groups with tree planting, care and tree inventory projects. We believe that both the workshops and projects provide excellent outlets for the RI Tree community, especially the Tree Stewards, to improve and enhance their talents. We encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities. The Council will invite them to participate in these continuing education outlets through e-mails, newsletters, direct mailings and by posting to our web site.
