ARBOR DAY Celebrated the Old Fashion Way!!! |
|
The 2011 Arbor Day Fair was a smashing success thanks to the 70 volunteers who descended upon Ninigret Park in Charlestown, RI to plant saplings along both sides of the major road leading into the park. This Arbor Day celebration took place on Saturday, May 7 from 9AM to 3PM. Volunteers were treated to brief talks by Charlestown Town officials who hosted the event and by representatives of RITree and the National Grid Companies who sponsored it. Following the speakers, the volunteers got down to work. When all was done a short 6 hours later, they had installed a total of 80 Red maple, London plane and Silver linden saplings. The plants were set out in a line back of the road in a wide grass strip. All the saplings were also mulched and watered by volunteers. According to RITree’s technical advisor, John Campanini, the goal was to create a grand entrance full of leafy, big trees that will greet visitors as soon as they enter the park. “The tree types we planted are all very hardy, vigorous growing plants,” their branches should eventually intertwine forming a continuous green necklace down the spine of the park in years to come.” |
