ALB News Update

Massachusetts The battle to eradicate the ALB from Massachusetts is now in its 2nd year. This exotic plant pest was initially found attacking trees in the Glendale neighborhood of Worcester in August 2008. Since then, this pest has also been discovered killing trees north and west of Worcester in the towns of Holden, Boyleston, West Boyleston and Shrewsbury.

ALB News Update

Nationally USDA-Forest Service recently pumped another $23M into New York City’s ALB eradication efforts. The money will be used to remove ALB infested trees, apply preventive chemicals to non-infested host trees, and to continue ALB public outreach efforts. The ALB was initially found killing trees in Brooklyn, NY in 1996.

ALB Non Host Tree Species

The following 16 species were planted in 2009 under the Worcester’s ALB Reforestation Program. The USDA-Forest Service considers them non-host plants resistant to ALB damage. All of these species are commercially available through nursery outlets in New England.

MASSACHUSETTS
Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation ( DCR ) issue a quarantine order to suppress, control and eradicate ALB in any area of Massachusetts. The order regulates the transport of wood debris ½ in diameter or larger within the quarantine area.
