Got a tree question? Ask Dr. Dendro!

A young Linden street tree, very healthy, is suddenly dead. What might cause such a death, and how can it be prevented?
Dear Dr. Dendro,

I live in Providence.  A young Linden street tree in front of our house has been very healthy and growing rapidly in past years.  Now, this spring, it is suddenly dead.
(With the Forester's permission it was lightly pruned last year.)
What might cause such a death, and how can it be prevented?
Thank you very much. Donald

I would like to build a tree house, doing as little harm as possible to the tree. Can you point me in the right direction?
Dear Dr Dendro,

I would like to build a tree house for my kids. I am very concerned with doing as little harm as possible to the tree. Can you point me in the right direction? Does anyone in Rhode Island offer advice?
Thank you,
Tim

What tree(s) would you suggest concerning the closeness of the street and power lines?
Dear RITree,

Hello. My name is David Sylvia. My wife Darlene and I attended the 2nd annual Tree Stewards Symposium where you honored my father-in-law Tom Wahl by planting of a beautiful magnolia, which I might add, is coming along nicely.

Over the years we had to take down 2 large trees in our front yard and we miss them greatly. We would like to replace one of them but are limited in space and would like your expert opinion.

We are looking for:
  1. 1. A medium sized tree (flowering or not)
  2. 2. Branches start to sprout outward at least 3 ft. (or more) above ground
  3. 3. Not so high where it would interfere with power lines
  4. 4. Will be planted about 15 ft. from the street

I guess it would be similar to our dogwood that we have planted in our backyard. What tree(s) would you suggest and are there any concerns given the closeness of the street and power lines?

Thank you very much,
David Sylvia
